This evening, Arsenal will come up against a German club for the 29th time in the form of Bayern Munich.
From those previous 28 clashes, the Gunners have won exactly half of them, scoring 52 goals and conceding 40 in the process.
So, ahead of the first knockout round meeting at the Emirates Stadium with the holders, Sports Mole has looked back over five of Arsenal's most memorable victories over teams from the Bundesliga.
1. Werder Bremen 2-4 Arsenal, March 2000
Leading 2-0 from the first leg at Highbury, Arsenal could have been forgiven for adopting a cautious approach during the return meeting at the Weserstadion. If that was the message that Arsene Wenger had given to his players, midfielder Ray Parlour obviously wasn't listening as he scored a hat-trick, while Thierry Henry also got in on the act. The UEFA Cup quarter-final would end sourly for the French striker, though, as he was sent off for a late challenge. Marco Bode and Rade Bogdanovic got their names on the scoresheet for the hosts, but they were merely consolation contributions.
2. Arsenal 4-1 Bayer Leverkusen, February 2002
The German side would go on to prove themselves to be the surprise package during the 2001-02 Champions League campaign, but there was little sign of the success that they were about to enjoy in the second group stage at Highbury. Arsenal swept aside their opponents, with goals from Robert Pires and Henry putting them 2-0 up within the first seven minutes. Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp added further goals after the restart, while Leverkusen's Zoltan Sebescen added a late strike for the away team. Ultimately, though, Leverkusen progressed as group winners and went on to reach the final, whereas Arsenal finished third.
3. Arsenal 2-1 Borussia Dortmund, November 2011
The Gunners played host to Dortmund knowing that a victory would see them qualify for the knockout stages as group winners. A second-half double from Robin van Persie put Wenger's men in control of proceedings, although future Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa ensured a nervy finish in North London when he reduced the arrears in stoppage time. Arsenal held out, though, to seal their route into the last 16.
4. Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal, March 2013
Having been comfortably defeated 3-1 during the home leg, this 2-0 victory was not enough to see Arsenal topple the Bavarians, who progressed on the away goals rule. The strikes from French duo Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny allowed Arsenal to win on the night and although it wasn't a sufficient outcome, it could well have given the Arsenal squad confidence ahead of tonight's tie.
5. Borussia Dortmund 0-1 Arsenal, November 2013
Earlier this season Dortmund arrived at the Emirates Stadium in the group stages and for large parts outclassed the home team to seal a 2-1 win. Many had predicted that the same thing might occur in the return match at the Westfalenstadion, but the Premier League side had other ideas. They dominated most of the contest and Aaron Ramsey's close-range header, which proved to be the winning goal, was just reward for their performance. What's more, it also kept Arsenal top of the group with two matches remaining.
