Samuel Eto'o returns but Cameroon fail to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations

Eto'o return fails to inspire Cameroon

Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o made his international return but was unable to help his country qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Eto'o ended a self-imposed exile to try to help Cameroon overturn a two-goal deficit to Cape Verde in the second leg of their qualifying tie.

The former Inter Milan and Barcelona striker helped the Indomitable Lions win 2-1 on the day, with the goals coming from Achille Emana and 16-year-old Fabrice Olinga.

Despite the positive result Cameroon slipped to a 3-2 aggregate defeat, allowing Cape Verde to secure a place in the Nations Cup finals for the first time in its history.

Anzhi Makhachkala striker Eto'o must now turn his attention to helping Cameroon earn a place at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.
