AFC Wimbledon chief executive Erik Samuelson has expressed his belief that the club will return to the borough of Merton.
The Dons have submitted a proposal to redevelop Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, which is on the same road as their former Plough Lane ground.
The League Two club currently play their home matches at Kingsmeadow.
Samuelson told BBC London 94.9: "I'm notorious for being extremely cautious and careful about what I say. This is the best chance we have got of going home. Personally I believe it is going to happen.
"What we are doing is implementing the wish of the fans to go home. Wimbledon is our home. Even before Wimbledon played at Plough Lane we played on what is now the Greyhound Stadium site.
"It literally would be going to one of our original homes."
Wimbledon were forced to leave Plough Lane in 1991 due to issues surrounding the ground's safety.
