Marco van Basten reveals that he held "exploratory talks" with AC Milan about becoming manager two years ago

Marco van Basten has revealed that he held "exploratory talks" with AC Milan about the prospect of becoming manager two years ago.

The Dutchman has said that he was approached by director Ariedo Braida when the Rossoneri were searching for a successor to Leonardo, who left in 2010.

Instead, Massimiliano Allegri was recruited from Cagliari and won the Serie A title at the first time of asking.

Van Basten, who is currently in charge at Eredivisie side Heerenveen, said that he does not feel ready to take over his former club just yet.

"I never turned down the Milan bench," he told Sky Sport Italia. "I spoke two years ago with director Ariedo Braida, but it was only part of exploratory talks and nothing serious.

"I had to have ankle surgery and then nothing more came of it. Besides, I do not feel ready to be the Milan coach. I am in charge of Heerenveen and want more time to improve myself.

"We'll see in the future. The work of a coach is different to that of a player, as he has to make players understand how to work together and it takes time to become a good manager."

Van Basten spent eight years with Milan as a player.
