Nesta: Lazio criticism 'unfair'

AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has admitted he is still disappointed that he was criticised for leaving Lazio in 2002.

Nesta, who was seen as a traitor when he left the Stadio Olimpico for Milan, insists that his agreement to the transfer was based on the serious financial issues that the club was going through at the time.

"I would never have wanted to leave but the club had to raise cash," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"I remember that day like yesterday. It all happened in such a hurry that I could not make a decision.

"Passing me off as a traitor hurt because the truth came out that Lazio was in debt and had to sell. I deserved more respect."

Meanwhile, league leaders Milan travel to Catania in Serie A this weekend.
