Preview: Aberdeen vs. St Johnstone - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Scottish Premiership clash between Aberdeen and St Johnstone, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Aberdeen will be looking to respond after being knocked out of the Scottish Cup at the weekend when they host St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership in a rearranged match.

Stephen Glass lost his job following the defeat, while the visitors enjoyed a weekend break, but they will have the chance to lift themselves off the foot of the table with a victory.

Aberdeen were knocked out of the Scottish Cup on Saturday, despite the fact that Christian Ramirez found the back of the net in the third minute to give his team the lead.

However, Motherwell fought back within the first half, scoring twice to win the game 2-1, which continued the poor run of form that the Dons are in right now.

The squad have failed to win in their previous five outings, and in the league, they have not picked up three points since Boxing Day, which is something the club will be looking to turn around.

After 11 months in charge of the Dons, Glass was fired, which leaves Aberdeen without a manager heading into this match, and it is unclear if there will be a new hire within that time.

The club have slipped down the table as of late, and they currently find themselves in ninth place, but a victory on Tuesday could see them climb as high as sixth, placing real pressure on the match.

St Johnstone will also be feeling the need to pick up three points in midweek due to the fact they are currently bottom of the league, rapidly running out of games in order to secure their survival.

A victory could take them above Dundee, and that would add some pressure onto those teams above them, but right now they are eight points adrift of safety, which they will be hoping to cut down on Tuesday.

The Saints were defeated by St Mirren in their last outing, with Callum Hendry's opening goal not being enough on that day, but since the turn of the year, the performances have improved.

Callum Davidson's side have drawn twice, keeping clean sheets in both of those fixtures, while they also picked up three points against Livingston, which have helped to keep them in the fight for survival.

Both teams have picked up victories against each other this season, with both previous matches finishing 1-0, and that is something that will bring each squad in with confidence here.

Team News

Michael Devlin remains unavailable for the Dons due to his ankle injury, while two changes were made during their recent outing which saw Funso Ojo and Adam Montgomery come into the side.

With a new manager set to be in the dugout on Tuesday, it will be hard to predict how the squad will set out, but with a caretaker role likely be set to take charge, following the same 4-2-3-1 formation can be expected.

Hendry will likely maintain his position in the St Johnstone starting lineup, with Glenn Middleton likely to partner him at the top of the field.

Stevie May could be brought back into the team after being dropped to the bench against St Mirren, only for him to come on as a substitute, while the Saints will continue to push three at the back.

Aberdeen possible starting lineup:
Woods; McCrorie, Gallagher, Bates, Montgomery; Ojo, Brown; Hayes, Ferguson, Besuijen; Ramirez

St Johnstone possible starting lineup:
Clark; Cleary, Gordon, McCart; Gallacher, May, Davidson, MacPherson, Crawford; Middleton, Hendry

We say: Aberdeen 0-1 St Johnstone

Aberdeen are in an extremely poor run of form, and the fact that they are now without a manager is something that will make this particular match even more difficult for them.

St Johnstone have a lot to fight for within this match as they hope to remain in the top flight for next season, and after a break at the weekend they should have the edge here.
