Michael van Gerwen continues title defence with comfortable win

Michael van Gerwen continues his World Championship title defence with a comfortable victory over Sascha Stein, while Benito van de Pas and Gary Anderson also progress.

Michael van Gerwen has continued his defence of the PDC World Darts Championship with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Sascha Stein in the second round.

The German qualifier looked to be on course for a shock result when he took the opening set, but Van Gerwen stormed back to win the next four and book his place in the third round, where he will face Terry Jenkins.

There was an upset in the first game of the evening session, however, as eighth seed Dave Chisnall was beaten 4-2 by Benito van de Pas.

Chisnall won two of the first three sets 3-0, but the Dutchman fought back with three consecutive sets to clinch a surprise result and send the Englishman crashing out.

The best was saved until last, however, as Gary Anderson and Jelle Klaasen played out a thrilling match in the final encounter of the day.

Anderson, seeded fourth for the tournament, looked to be heading for an early exit at 3-1 down in the best-of-seven match, but fought back to clinch the victory 4-3.

The Scotsman finished with an average of 103.02 to avoid it being a Dutch treble in the evening session, although Klaasen also finished with a triple-figure average.
