The home side struggled to create try-scoring opportunities early on, but Greig Laidlaw managed to convert two penalties to put Scotland ahead.

Tommy Seymour added the first try of the match 10 minutes before the break, while Sean Lamont had one disallowed as the hosts finished the first half in control.

Kenki Fukuoka added two tries after the break to bring Japan back into contention, but further efforts from Laidlaw, Seymour, Alasdair Dickinson and Duncan Weir helped Scotland open up an 18-point advantage, before Lamont went over inside the last two minutes.

Scotland are back in action next Sunday when they host South Africa.
