Wolverhampton Wanderers frustrated in Preston North End stalemate

Wolverhampton Wanderers draw a blank in their opening League One fixture, a stalemate with Preston North End at Deepdale.

Life in League One has got off to an inauspicious start for Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Kenny Jackett's side having to settle for a point against Preston North End.

Simon Grayson's team started the match brightly, with Lee Holmes posing a potent threat down the left flank.

Bakary Sako then drilled a strike towards goal at the other end, with his low effort needing a strong save from Preston goalkeeper Declan Rudd.

Wolves then lost central defender Richard Stearman to an early injury, with George Elokobi quickly brought off the bench to take his place.

The visitors then had two moments of encouragement just before the break, with Wolves threatening first through Leigh Griffiths.

The forward had a fierce volley cleared off the line by a last-ditch header from Paul Huntingdon, before Sam Ricketts saw a corner kick come back off the crossbar.

After the interval Sako forced another smart stop from Rudd, with Bailey Wright's header missing the target at the other end.

Jackett switched to a 4-4-2 in the closing stages, introducing substitute Jake Cassidy in search of a late winner.

Preston held firm and were rewarded with a point on the opening day, with Wolves drawing a blank at Deepdale despite creating chances.
