Wanderers claim Sydney bragging rights

First-half goals from Iacopo La Rocca and Shinji Ono seal a deserved 2-0 win for Western Sydney Wanderers at rivals Sydney FC in round three of the A-League.

Western Sydney Wanderers have continued their unbeaten start in the A-League by winning comfortably at rivals Sydney FC.

The victory moves Wanderers up to second in the table after three rounds of fixtures.

Iacopo La Rocca headed the visitors in front on 13 minutes.

The ball was in the hosts' net again moments later, but Youssouf Hersi's neat finish counted for nothing as he was correctly ruled offside.

Wanderers only had to wait until the 26th minute to double their lead though, as Shinji Ono found the net.

The Japanese international chipped the ball over the head of Sebastian Ryall, before turning smartly on the edge of the penalty area and guiding a low volley just inside Vedran Janjetovic's far post.

Nikola Petkovic rattled the visitors' crossbar with a long-range free kick just after the half-hour, but it was a rare moment of concern in an otherwise worry-free half for the Wanderers defence.

Sydney FC, who were without star forward Alessandro Del Piero after the Italian failed a pre-match fitness test, improved after half time.

However, they rarely threatened to get back into the contest, as Wanderers sat deep and defended well.

In fact, the best chance of the second period fell to Wanderers midfielder Mateo Poljak, whose effort was just off target from close range.
