Substitute Leon Clarke heads Wolves three points away at Sheffield Wednesday

Wolves substitute Leon Clarke nets a late winner as they win away at Sheffield Wednesday.

Substitute Leon Clarke scored a late header to give Wolverhampton Wanderers a late win at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship this afternoon.

Wednesday made a bright start and after six minutes it needed a last-ditch clearance from Richard Stearman to prevent Steve May slotting the ball in after he rounded the goalkeeper.

The hosts continued to press and created the best chances, as Royston Drenthe went close with a volley and his corner was headed narrowly wide by Glenn Loovens.

May will feel he should have given the Owls the lead in the 40th minute when the ball was cut back to him inside the box, but instead of scoring he blazed it over the bar.

Wolves started the second half strongly and almost took the lead, but Rajiv van la Parra blazed wide after the keeper parried a shot from Kevin McDonald.

Van la Parra was then sent through by Danny Graham but the keeper smothered his shot, before his header from a Kortney Hause cross lacked the power to trouble Gomes.

Wednesday winger Royston Drenthe came within inches of scoring a late goal when he drifted in from the left-hand side and smashed an effort wide, but the deadlock was broken minutes later when Clarke fired home a Scott McDonald cross from close range.

May almost snatched a point for the hosts in stoppage time, but he prodded wide from only a few yards out.
