Atletico Madrid booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid on Thursday.
Atletico entered the match with a two-goal lead from the first leg and that became three inside the first minute when Fernando Torres found the back of the net.
Sergio Ramos levelled the scores on the night after 20 minutes, but Torres netted a second after 46 minutes to leave Real Madrid needing four goals to advance.
Cristiano Ronaldo made it 2-2 eight minutes later, but the home side could not break down a stern Atletico defence in the remaining 30 minutes as Los Blancos exited the competition at the last-16 stage.
Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two Madrid rivals.

Was the result fair?
Quite how Real Madrid failed to win this match is a question that Carlo Ancelotti will be asking for some time. Atletico took the lead inside one minute, but that was their only shot on target in the first 45 minutes. Real Madrid had 20 attempts during the first period - 31 in total - and really should have been a couple of goals ahead at the interval. As it transpired, it was Atletico that netted the third of the evening early in the second half to leave Real Madrid needing four goals to advance.
One of those came from Ronaldo, who scored with a header after 54 minutes, but it was difficult to envisage the home side scoring another three times in the final 30 minutes, especially against a side of Atletico's ilk and defensive capabilities. Whether Real Madrid deserved to advance over the two legs is another question, but there is little doubting that they deserved to win on the night here. They dominated the possession and had a whole host of chances, but somehow just managed the two goals.
Real Madrid's performance
Moments before kickoff at the Bernabeu, Ronaldo showed his Ballon d'Or trophy to the crowd, while Ramos and Toni Kroos were also lauded for their spot in the FIFPro World XI. Atletico were not interested in the pre-match celebration, however, and they took the lead inside the first minute. Whether Real Madrid were fully concentrated on the task in hand from the very first whistle is up for debate and the opener from Torres immediately placed them on the back foot. In fairness to Los Blancos, however, their response in the opening half of football was very impressive.
In truth, they should have been at least 3-1 ahead at the interval, but poor finishing coupled with some excellent defending meant that Atletico kept the score to 1-1 after 45 minutes. Real Madrid would have been confident of turning the tie around when they took to the field for the second period, but Torres's second all but ended their challenge. They continued to enjoy much of the possession, but the same intensity from the first period just was not there. The Copa del Rey will have been third on Real Madrid's list of priorities this season, but their recent form against Atletico will be a serious worry for the club.
Atletico's performance
Atletico entered the second leg off the back of a 3-1 defeat at Barcelona in a match where they struggled to contain the Catalan outfit. They have loved their trips to the Bernabeu in recent seasons, however, and made the perfect start inside one minute. As expected, the Spanish champions then spent long periods without possession and by their own high standards, conceded a poor goal after 20 minutes. From that moment forward, they had to ride their luck as the home team dominated the ball and created chance after chance, but Miranda - on his return - and Diego Godin were both excellent at the heart of the defence.
Antoine Griezmann, who registered two assists, also provided an outlet in the final third, but the headlines, quite rightly, will go to a certain Torres, who had a night to remember. The Spaniard's first goal was an excellent finish into the top corner, while his second was a demonstration of the type of skill that he certainly still possesses. Atletico are the masters at killing matches when they need to and that was indeed the case in the final 30 minutes. Many expected Diego Simeone's side to fall away this season after losing key players in the summer, but that has simply not transpired. They are not going anywhere.
Sports Mole's man of the match
Fernando Torres: In truth, Torres was not seen for long spells at the Bernabeu, but he made a vital contribution to the match. As discussed above, both of the Spaniard's goals were of the highest quality and he showed glimpses of the type of form that made him one of the best strikers in Europe once upon a time. Confidence is sometimes overlooked in football, but Torres seems to feel loved once again and the Spanish international could turn out to be one of the shrewdest signings of the season.
Biggest gaffe
There are two moments that stick out. Atletico stopper Jan Oblak had a horror moment for Real Madrid's first goal when he decided to come for a cross, but got nowhere near the ball, allowing Ramos to head into an empty net. However, Ramos was also guilty of a poor moment in the build-up to Atletico's first, when he presented the ball straight to Griezmann deep inside the Real Madrid half. Griezmann then fed Torres and moments later, the ball was in the back of the net.
Referee performance
As far as matches between these two sides go, Antonio Mateu had a fairly straightforward evening. The Spanish official only issued one yellow card in the first period, but that number did rise to eight in the second half. That said, there were no serious flare-ups between the two sides and only one penalty shout, which was quickly turned down. For the most part, Mateu had control at the Bernabeu and neither manager will have had too many complaints with his performance.
What next?
Real Madrid: Los Blancos return to league action on Sunday with a trip to fellow capital side Getafe.
Atletico: Atletico, meanwhile, host basement team Granada in the league on Sunday afternoon.
