Late Papiss Cisse strike seals win for Newcastle United

Papiss Cisse scores a stoppage-time winner to give Newcastle United a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in their Premier League meeting at St James' Park.

Papiss Cisse scored in stoppage time to give Newcastle United a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in their Premier League meeting at St James' Park.

Cameron Jerome came close to giving the visitors an early lead when he met Jason Puncheon's cross at the front post, but he put his header wide.

Newcastle threatened soon after when Cisse's fierce strike was palmed away by the keeper and Luuk de Jong followed up to head the rebound over.

Cisse came close again when his low strike was beaten away by Julian Speroni, before Yoan Gouffran saw his own attempt saved.

The visitors were looking dangerous on the break and Yannick Bolasie worked himself some room just inside the box, but fired his strike narrowly over.

After the break Palace were inches away from taking the lead as Bolasie cut inside from the left wing, before curling a shot onto the bar.

The Magpies then worked an opening of their own as Moussa Sissoko slid a through-ball into the path of Cisse, but Speroni was out quickly off his line to block the striker's attempt.

Cisse continued to look the player most likely to break the deadlock and headed narrowly wide after meeting Hatem Ben Arfa's cross at the near post.

As the game entered stoppage time, Cheick Tiote came close to scoring with a long-range drive that beat the keeper but crashed against the bar.

There was still time for Newcastle and in the fourth minute of added time they found the net when Cisse met Ben Arfa's cross to head past Speroni and steal all three points.
