Wayne Rooney apologies following 'late-night drinking celebrations'

Wayne Rooney apologises for "inappropriate" pictures taken of him during a late-night drinking session at England's team hotel.

England captain Wayne Rooney has apologised after allegedly drinking late into the night following the nation's World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.

The 31-year-old is believed to have spent his night off on Saturday mingling with guests in England's team hotel, while members of the backroom staff and Everton defender Phil Jagielka were also present.

A picture of Rooney looking bleary eyed was published by the press, and now the Football Association has decided to review its policy into how players and staff spend their down time while on international duty.

In response to the reports, a spokesman for the footballer released a statement to PA, which read: "Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published today.

"Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.

"Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both [England interim manager] Gareth Southgate and [FA technical director] Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise. He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."

Meanwhile, United manager Jose Mourinho is said to be furious with the FA for allowing Rooney to get involved in such antics while on international duty.
