Howard Wilkinson to advise Football Association over England manager

LMA chairman and former caretaker England boss Howard Wilkinson will advise the FA on the next permanent manager of the national team.

Former England caretaker manager Howard Wilkinson will advise the Football Association on the next permanent boss of the national team.

Gareth Southgate is currently in temporary charge of England, but his four-game contract will expire after the ongoing international break.

Southgate is considered the favourite to be named as Sam Allardyce's permanent successor, with a decision expected before England's first match of 2017 in March.

When selecting Allardyce the FA relied on a three-man committee including Martin Glenn, David Gill and Dan Ashworth, but this time around they are expected to gather advice from a number of figures in the game.

Wilkinson, who currently serves as the LMA chairman, took temporary charge of England following the sacking of Glenn Hoddle in 1999 and again one year later after Kevin Keegan's shock resignation.

The 72-year-old is the last English manager to have won the top-flight title, doing so with Leeds United in 1992.
