Marcelo Bielsa coy on Leeds United promotion hopes

Marcelo Bielsa praises the "high intensity" performance from his Leeds United side to overcome Stoke City, but is unsure whether a promotion challenge is on the cards.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has insisted that "it is too soon" to determine whether his side have what it takes to mount a Championship promotion challenge.

The Whites made the perfect start to life under their new manager by beating title favourites Stoke City 3-1 in their 2018-19 opener at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

Despite impressing against the side tipped to finish top of the pile, though, highly-regarded coach Bielsa is wary of making any predictions as to where his own side will finish this term.

"It's too soon to make any analysis, either positive or negative," he said at his post-match press conference. "It was a game with high intensity. Our players were very ambitious and they did a great physical effort.

"The physical effort of the players pleased me most; the productivity of the players was also pretty high. Our offensive actions were very good in some moments."

Leeds travel to Derby County for their next league outing, before facing Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United on home soil.
