Burnley relegated from Premier League despite win at Hull City

Burnley are relegated from the Premier League despite securing a 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Hull City in their Premier League clash at the KC Stadium.

The visitors were quickest out of the starting blocks as they probed forward in the opening stages and had a great chance from a free kick 10 minutes in following Kieran Trippier's trip on Stephen Quinn.

Robbie Brady's set piece, however, went on to hit the wall, before Tom Huddlestone fired wide from the subsequent rebound.

Hull continued to turn the screw and came close again in the 20th minute when Brady skipped across the left byline and into the Burnley area, but Clarets skipper Jason Shackell hacked his effort away from inside the six-yard box.

The Clarets soon had a chance of their own when Ashley Barnes nodded over on the half-hour mark, but the Tigers countered with a Brady free kick that smashed against the bar.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock by half time but both began the second half with intent and a number of chances were registered at both ends.

Burnley had a penalty shout in the 52nd minute when Danny Ings tumbled in the Hull area, but referee Martin Atkinson waved away the appeals.

It mattered little because, just after the hour, the Clarets were in front through Ings as the striker latched onto a loose ball inside the Hull penalty area to fire into the bottom corner for his first goal in 10 games.

The Tigers countered through Abel Hernandez as the substitute back-heeled a loose ball bobbling in the Burnley box towards goal, but it fell straight to Tom Heaton.

Ultimately, Hull ran out of ideas as they failed to find an equaliser, leaving them on the brink of relegation from the Premier League.

Meanwhile Sean Dyche's side were confirmed as relegated despite their win, as Newcastle United's 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion meant that the Clarets could not claw back their points deficit.
