Josep Maria Bartomeu apologises for Barcelona collapse at Roma

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu apologises for his side's Champions League exit but acknowledges that "Roma were the better team on the pitch".

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has apologised for his side's Champions League elimination at the hands of Roma on Tuesday night.

The Blaugrana entered the quarter-final second leg holding a 4-1 advantage from the first encounter at Camp Nou, but were hammered 3-0 in Rome and knocked out of the competition on away goals.

Bartomeu acknowledged that the Serie A giants were the better team on the night and reiterated Barca's desire to win on all fronts - no matter who the manager may be.

"I'm really sorry. Roma were the better team on the pitch," Bartomeu told Catalan broadcaster TV3 after the game. "Roma believed and showed that when you try hard, you can achieve your objectives.

"Of course [this defeat] affects us, but we have some important games coming up and the players will recover. This team are always prepared to win on all fronts, be it with Ernesto Valverde or another coach. We fight to win everything every season, but tonight it wasn't to be."

Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas grabbed the goals for the Giallorossi on a memorable night in the Italian capital.
