Bernard Tomic has booked a spot in the second round at Wimbledon after coming through a rain-affected first-round clash against Fernando Verdasco.
The 23-year-old Australian was pushed to five sets, the final of which was played on Wednesday after yesterday's play was abandoned due to rain.
Tomic managed to seal a 4-6 6-3 6-3 3-6 6-4 win, which in total lasted two hours and 50 minutes on the grass court at SW19.
Verdasco started the stronger of the two competitors by earning a double break, and despite dropping one of his service games, the Spaniard managed to win the set.
It was tight in the second as games went by the way of serve, but Tomic began to show threat as he eventually broke after failing to convert three break points earlier in the set.
With sets at one apiece, it was a tense affair, but Tomic managed to gain some momentum as he broke early before sealing the lead.
It looked as though Verdasco's battling efforts would come to nothing after his opponent saved four break points, but the Spaniard grabbed a double break to win the fourth set.
After the match was abandoned, the players resumed play this afternoon and after some further interruptions Tomic required just one break of serve to send himself into the next round.
