Sharapova overcomes Mladenovic challenge

Maria Sharapova has moved through to the second round of Wimbledon with a hard-fought victory over Kristina Mladenovic.

The Russian world number two was made to work in the opening set before she clinched it 7-5 in a tie-break.

French world number 37 Mladenovic continued to battle in the second, but she could not stop the 2004 champion from progressing 6-3.

Sharapova's next opponent will be either American Melanie Oudin or Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito.
