Andy Murray battles to four-set win over Fabio Fognini

Andy Murray is through to the last 16 of Wimbledon for the 11th time in his career with victory over Fabio Fognini.

British and world number one Andy Murray is through to the fourth round of Wimbledon after earning a hard-fought win over Fabio Fognini on Centre Court.

The defending champion required two hours and 39 minutes to overcome his opponent, who battled back to level up at 1-1 but did not have enough to prevent the home favourite from progressing.

Murray, one of two remaining Brits in the competition following Johanna Konta's earlier triumph over Maria Sakkari, eventually prevailed 6-2 4-6 6-1 7-5 in a thriller.

Fognini failed to truly get going in the opening set, losing two breaks of serve against the two-time winner of the Grand Slam event.

The second was a much tighter affair, though, with the Italian taking the set with two breaks to give Murray a little something to think about.

Murray comfortably took the third set, encountering few problems along the way, but his 29th seed opponent earned five set points in the fourth to potentially force a decider.

After failing to take each of them, Murray dug deep to make it through to the last 16 for the 11th time in his career, where he will meet Benoit Paire on Monday.
