Mayer edges out Janowicz in five

An epic battle on Court 12 ended with Florian Mayer edging out Jerzy Janowicz in five sets this evening.

In a first set where both men held serve throughout and there was nothing between the two, it was the German who edged it in a tie-breaker 7-5.

Then Janowicz played two scintillating sets against his seeded opponent, serving brilliantly and attacking the German's serve to take the next two sets 6-3 6-2.

Mayer found his rhythm in the fourth set, with one break enough to take the match to five sets, winning 6-3.

The fifth set was a thriller, each man serving fantastically and fending off his opponent. Heartbreak eventually came for the Pole, who was broken on his final service game as Mayer wrapped up the victory 7-6(5) 3-6 2-6 6-3 7-5.
