Angelique Kerber races into second round

Germany's Angelique Kerber has eased into the second round at Wimbledon with a 6-0 6-0 win over compatriot Carina Witthoeft this afternoon.

The 10th seed needed just 44 minutes on court to defeat the world number 53, who made seven double faults throughout a match in which she continually struggled with her serve.

Witthoeft did get a couple of exchanges against Kerber's serve, forcing her fellow German to save three break points during the match, but Kerber's returns proved too strong throughout.

Kerber varied her shots during the second set as she cruised towards the win, attempting a string of unsuccessful net shots, but dominating with her groundstrokes.

Kerber could face another German in round two as she will play the winner of the match between Mona Barthel and Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
