Laura Robson has slumped to a first-round defeat at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells against Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson.

Robson's loss came an hour after fellow Brit Heather Watson was beaten in straight sets by Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.

The British number two led 6-2 4-1 against Arvidsson before the world number 49 fought back by taking the second set 7-2 in the tie-break.

Arvidsson then swept Robson aside 6-1 in the final set to cap a disappointing opening round for the British women.
