Venus Williams ends Indian Wells boycott

Venus Williams confirms her participation at Indian Wells, 15 years after boycotting the tournament for alleged racism.

Venus Williams has confirmed that she will play Indian Wells this season, 15 years after boycotting the event for alleged racism.

The 35-year-old last appeared at the tournament in California in 2001, where she was booed along with sister Serena and members of her family.

Serena returned to the event last season but was forced to withdraw through injury at the semi-final stage.

Raymond Moore, chief exec at Indian Wells, said: "We are thrilled that Venus Williams, one of the greatest women's players in the history of the game, is returning to play in the BNP Paribas Open.

"Our fans embraced Serena last year, and we expect nothing less for Venus when she returns to compete at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden."

Other players scheduled to compete in March include Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.
