Warrington Wolves go to the top of Super League

Warrington Wolves go top of the Super League with a comfortable win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Warrington Wolves have risen to the top of Super League with a 26-14 win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The home side's kicking was the only negative in a highly polished performance in from of their own fans.

Warrington started well, pushing their opponents back and eventually scoring a try after eight minutes when Joel Monaghan went over in the corner after good play from Chris Riley. Unfortunately, Stefan Ratchford could not convert the kick.

The visitors improved after that and levelled the score thanks to Frankie Mariano, but they also missed their subsequent kick.

Brett Hodgson went over shortly after that, with Ratchford coming up short again before Tim Smith missed his second conversion after Danny Kirmond had levelled again at 8-8.

Mickey Higham went over between the posts just before half time, giving Ratchford the perfect chance to improve his kick ratio, which he duly did.

After an end-to-end start to the second period, Warrington increased their lead when Monaghan went over again, but from a tough angle the kick was missed once more.

Chris Bridge scored a try moments later to increase the hosts' lead. He decided to take the kick himself this time, but he also missed the chance to add two points.

Wakefield got themselves back into the match with a Liam Kaye try on 61 minutes, and this time the score was added to by Smith's kick. However, Riley went over himself to restore the home side's lead, although again, this preceded a missed kick.

Warrington had done enough, though, taking all the points to go top of Super League.
