Kieron Morris goal gives Wrexham win over Chester FC

An early goal from Kieron Morris gives Wrexham a 1-0 victory over Chester FC in the Conference Premier.

Wrexham have strengthened their bid to avoid a relegation battle in the Conference Premier with a 1-0 victory over Chester FC.

After reaching the FA Trophy final last weekend, Wrexham were on a high on their return to the Racecourse Ground, and it took just seven minutes for the Welsh club to take the lead as Connor Jennings played the ball to Kieron Morris, who sent a strike into the bottom corner.

Chester nearly hit back through Kieran Charnock, who headed wide from a corner before Matty Hughes lashed a volley inches past the post.

That near miss sparked Wrexham into life, and, after Manny Smith had sent a header off target, Morris came agonisingly close to netting his second when firing narrowly wide of the post.

Time and time again, through balls were finding their way past the Chester backline, and Joe Clarke advanced in on goal before seeing his effort blocked by Jon Worsnop shortly before half time.

The visitors returned after the break on the front foot, and only two fine interventions from Wrexham stopper Andy Coughlin denied both Gareth Roberts and Oliver McBurnie and kept his team ahead.

After a flurry of substitutions from both sides, chances began to dry up, with a speculative effort from Morris the closest that either team came to another goal.

That pattern continued during the closing stages in North Wales, and that was enough for the home side to move 12 points clear of the drop zone.
