Paul Lambert planning Wolverhampton Wanderers squad shakeup

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Paul Lambert reveals that he is planning a significant overhaul of his squad in the January transfer window.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Paul Lambert has revealed that he is planning a huge overhaul of his squad in the January transfer window.

The Midlands side currently have 30 players in their first-team squad after 13 new faces were brought in over the summer in the wake of the club's acquisition by Chinese firm Fosun International.

Lambert, who took over at Wolves last month following Walter Zenga's dismissal, told reporters that he wants to add new players in January but is planning a significant cull in order to get the squad size down to 23 players.

"There's more people than in Ben Hur!" Lambert is quoted as saying by the Express & Star. "And there were thousands in that movie. You need an abacus to count how many we've got. It's something we have to look at. We need to trim the squad, there's no two ways about it.

"You can't have that many when you train – one, you lose fitness with everybody else and two, there's just too many. It's still high even with the injured lads. I'd say 23 would be an optimum number.

"There are too many players and we need to cut down, but their training attitude has been first class. I've got it in my head where we need to be stronger. We'll have meetings in the coming weeks – there are a few positions we're looking at."

Wolves are currently 20th in the Championship table, just two points above the relegation zone.
