Wolves looking to end 44-year streak versus Everton

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to end a 44-year streak when they face Everton on Boxing Day.

Having started his reign with a 2-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Cup, Julen Lopetegui is striving to record three points in his first-ever Premier League fixture.

However, the West Midlands are without a victory in five matches in the top flight, resulting in the club sitting at the bottom of the standings.

The fixture at Goodison Park is arguably Wolves' most important of the season with 17th-placed Everton possessing a four-point lead over their upcoming visitors to Merseyside.

The Toffees will feel confident of inflicting more disappointment on Wolves due to the record of their opponents when it comes to games played on this day.

Wolves have failed to win a single top-flight fixture on Boxing Day since 1978, with seven contests taking place during that time.

However, it is worth noting that Wolves have not played on this day since the 2018-19 campaign, when Romain Saiss netted a late equaliser to draw 1-1 at Fulham.

Before then, the last such encounter came at home to Wigan Athletic in 2010, Hugo Rodallega and Tom Cleverley scoring in the opening 20 minutes to help earn a 2-1 victory at Molineux.

Another defeat for Wolves came a year earlier as they went down by a 2-0 scoreline at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun getting the goals.

In total, Wolves have two draws and five defeats from their last seven Boxing Day games, their most recent success coming versus Birmingham City 44 years ago.
