Maximilian Arnold rescues point for Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg avoid back-to-back Bundesliga home defeats as Maximilian Arnold's equaliser secures a 1-1 draw with Hamburger SV.

Maximilian Arnold secured a point as Wolfsburg avoided back-to-back home Bundesliga defeats by playing out a 1-1 draw with Hamburger SV this afternoon.

Hamburg sent out an early warning to the hosts when Pierre-Michel Lasogga used the space on offer outside the box to force Diego Benaglio into a save.

The lead belonged to the visitors midway through the first half as Benaglio made another stop to deny Lasogga, before seeing Nicolai Muller react quickest to fire home the rebound.

Wolfsburg would enjoy the majority of possession after falling behind, but they wasted a great chance to get back on level terms when Andre Schurrle, who had drifted into space in the box, saw Rene Adler make the save from his low effort.

Dieter Hecking's side were on top for much of the second half, and the introduction of Bas Dost almost had an immediate impact when the Dutch striker headed over from a corner.

As Hamburg dropped deeper to protect their slender advantage, Josuha Guilavogui accepted an invitation to unleash a long-range effort to force Adler into a good save.

The long spells of Wolfsburg pressure continued, with Julian Draxler shooting just wide from a Max Kruse cross before Adler kept out Arnold's free kick.

Arnold would get a second chance to find the net 12 minutes from time, and he took full advantage to secure a point by finishing Vieirinha's cross from close range.
