Preview: Wolfsburg vs. Eintracht Frankfurt - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Bundesliga clash between Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Bundesliga leaders Wolfsburg will look to record a fifth successive victory when they play host to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday evening.

Despite putting together a three-match unbeaten streak in Germany's top flight, the visitors are still looking for their first win of the season.

Match preview

When Mark van Bommel was appointed as Wolfsburg manager earlier this year, he was tasked with trying to keep the club in the top four of the Bundesliga and to reach the Champions League knockout stages.

Few people would have expected an unbeaten start through five games in those competitions, the solitary goal that they have conceded against Hertha Berlin coming from the penalty spot.

Even though their perfect start came to a halt against Lille in midweek, the goalless draw in France has given Van Bommel's side something to build upon in a competitive group.

Wolfsburg are being out-performed by their domestic rivals in the final third, but Lukas Nmecha is showing signs that he could prove to be a shrewd piece of business.

While the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund do not feature on the schedule until the end of November, Wolfsburg must handle the pressure of winning games such as this one if they want to be regarded as genuine title contenders.

Sunday's game sees them come face-to-face with former manager Oliver Glasner for the first time since he switched clubs during the summer.

Frankfurt would have hoped for similar success to that of Wolfsburg, but they are still without a win this season from their six matches in all competitions.

Late goals cost them against Arminia Bielefeld and Stuttgart, their respective equalisers coming in the 86th and 88th minutes respectively.

Although a comeback draw has since been recorded against Fenerbahce in the Europa League, there is growing pressure on Glasner to get off the mark with Frankfurt now down in 15th position.

Team News

Wolfsburg's John Brooks walks off dejected after receiving a red card on September 14, 2021© Reuters

With his Champions League red card only applying to that competition, John Brooks will line up in the centre of the Wolfsburg defence.

Ridle Baku is on standby to deputise for Kevin Mbabu, who has a knee issue, and such a change would lead to Nmecha starting further down the right flank.

Sam Lammers is expected to retain his place in the Frankfurt attack after netting his first goal of the season in midweek.

Jens Petter Hauge will hope to get the nod over Jesper Lindstrom in a creative position behind the Dutchman.

Christopher Lenz will be assessed in the days before the game after sustaining a muscle injury.

Wolfsburg possible starting lineup:
Casteels; Baku, Brooks, Lacroix, Roussillon; Arnold, Guilavogui, Philipp; Nmecha, Weghorst, Steffen

Eintracht Frankfurt possible starting lineup:
Trapp; Hasebe, Hinteregger, Ndicka; Costa, Ljubicic, Sow, Kostic; Hauge, Kamada; Lammers

We say: Wolfsburg 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

At some point this season, you would expect Frankfurt to find some form and make quick headway up the table. However, it may not happen this weekend, and we are predicting the early pacesetters to prevail by the odd goal in three.
