Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy believes that his side's 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers could be crucial in their survival campaign.

Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy has admitted his relief in the Latics snatching a "massive" point against Queens Park Rangers.

The North West side dampened QPR's Premier League survival hopes by grabbing an equaliser in the 94th minute courtesy of a free kick from Shaun Maloney yesterday.

"It was a very tough game and I think the most important thing is that we got the point out of it late on," McCarthy told the club's official website.

"It wasn't a pretty game and it wasn't easy to play in but getting points is essential for us and Shaun has popped up with an unbelievable free kick to grab us a massive point."

The Latics sit third from bottom in the table on goal difference.
