Wigan vs Notts County - prediction, team news, lineups

Wigan Athletic welcome Notts County to the Brick Community Stadium for a first-round clash in the EFL Cup this Tuesday night.

The Latics have enjoyed a mixed start to their League One season, while the Magpies are yet to win a competitive game.

Match preview

Wigan kicked off their League One campaign on a serious high as Ryan Lowe’s men thrashed Northampton Town 3-1.

The Latics were unable to go back-to-back, with the club enduring a 2-0 defeat away at Leyton Orient – a result which maintained their woeful record away from home this calendar year.

Speaking of woeful records, Wigan have been utterly hopeless in the EFL Cup, bowing out in the first round in six of their last seven seasons.

The club have only won three matches in the competition across 11 years, with one third-round appearance being their highlight over the last decade.

Notts County, on the other hand, have recently returned to the EFL Cup following their 2023 promotion to League Two.

The Magpies have been back in the Football League for two seasons, though they have not been able to make their mark in cup competitions – bowing out in the first round of successive EFL Cup campaigns.

To make matters worse, Martin Paterson’s side have not enjoyed a particularly strong start to the new season, picking up one point from their opening two matches.

A 1-1 draw with Newport on the opening day of the season was backed up with a 2-1 home defeat to Salford – a run which leaves them with one competitive victory since early April.

Team News

Wigan are battling with a number of injuries in these early weeks of the season, including one sustained in their last league outing.

James Carragher, who is the son of Jamie Carragher, was forced to leave the field just five minutes into Wigan’s game with Leyton Orient and will not be available for Tuesday’s cup clash.

Steven Sessegnon, who was sent off in that same game, is suspended and will also remain on the sidelines.

Wigan are also dealing with an injured trio of Joe Adams, Dion Rankine and Matthew Smith.

Notts County are also dealing with a long absentee list ahead of Tuesday’s fixture, with six players set to be on the sidelines.

Will Jarvis, Alassana Jatta, Lucas Ness, Scott Robertson, Mia Traore and Nicholas Tsaroulla are all recovering from various injuries.

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup: Tickle; Aimson, Kerr, Mellish; Francois; Weir, Wright, Hungbo, Murray; Mullin, Costelloe

Notts County possible starting lineup: Roos; Bedeau, Platt, Aljofree, Cotter; Palmer, Norburn, Iorpenda; Bennetts, Dennis, Jones

We say: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Notts County

Both these teams have a rotten record in the EFL Cup, but luckily one of them has to progress at the end of the day.

We are backing Wigan to utilise their home advantage and pick up a victory over the struggling Magpies.
