West Ham United defender Pablo Zabaleta urges his side to remain positive despite losing their first two games of the new Premier League season.

West Ham United defender Pablo Zabaleta has urged his side to remain positive despite their losing start to the Premier League season.

The Argentine full-back said that the Hammers should "not be afraid when they are winning" and need to improve as a team after surrendering a half-time lead to lose 2-1 at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

The defeat came on the back of a 4-0 loss to Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season in what was new boss Manuel Pellegrini's first competitive game in charge.

Zabaleta, who won the Premier League title under Pellegrini with Manchester City in 2014, told the club's official website: "We cannot be afraid when we are winning. I thought we had a good 45 minutes against Bournemouth, but in the second half we didn't have the same intensity and we gave them chances to score goals. That is what we have to improve on this season.

"We've got experience from last season, we cannot concede so many goals, and we cannot put ourselves in a situation where we don't believe in what we are doing.

"As players, we need to take responsibility because on the pitch, we make the decisions. We have a new manager, new players and a new style of football. It takes time. But we've got so much room for improvement. We need to be positive."

West Ham make the short trip to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to face an Arsenal side who are also without a win in their first two games of the season.
