West Ham reportedly claim that they will not hurry striker Andy Carroll back into action after the Liverpool loanee picked up a hamstring strain.

West Ham United have reportedly refused to put a timescale on the return of striker Andy Carroll.

The England international, who moved to Upton Park from Liverpool on a season-long loan, picked up a hamstring injury during his debut appearance for the Hammers in their 3-0 win over Fulham.

"It is not a precise science, if you speak to anybody about hamstrings they'll confirm that," ESPN quotes a source as saying. "So nobody can say how long it will be.

"He'll be rescanned next week, then we'll know more. The odds of him playing against Sunderland would be no more than 10%. There is a 35% chance of a comeback against Arsenal.

"If he doesn't make it back until Southampton that will be seven weeks out, and there is even a slight 5% chance it could be longer."

Recent reports claimed that the 23-year-old could return as soon as next week.
