Downing: 'Carroll injury is a big blow'

West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing has admitted that he feels disappointed for Andy Carroll after the striker was ruled out for four months with an ankle injury.

The setback continues Carroll's struggle to put together a string of games for the Hammers after his arrival last summer, but Downing is confident that another squad member can step up to replace the England international.

The 30-year-old told reporters: "He was really looking forward to getting up and running this season and he's had a bit of a setback. It's disappointing for him.

"It's a big blow for the team. He's a big player for us, but it's a chance for someone else to come in to stake their claim.

"It's disappointing for Andy, but it's a long season and we'll get him back as quick as we can."

Manager Sam Allardyce has already signed strikers Mauro Zarate and Enner Valencia during the transfer window.
