Sam Allardyce challenges West Ham United to make history

Sam Allardyce challenges his West Ham United troops to end a 35-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup this season.

Sam Allardyce has told his West Ham United troops to use the prospect of making history as motivation for winning the FA Cup this season.

It has been 35 years since West Ham lifted the famous trophy, with the Hammers only reaching one final in that period - a defeat to Liverpool in 2006.

They travel to Ashton Gate for a fourth-round clash at high-flying League One side Bristol City on Sunday, and Allardyce hopes that it is another stop on the road to glory.

"If it could bring success it would recreate modern history, particularly as we move into a new stadium," he told Sky Sports News.

"I'm sure a lot of West Ham supporters have fantastically fond memories of what we did at Wembley when we got promoted.

"If we can get to a cup final, it's generally for most fans a once in a lifetime occasion."

The East Londoners will leave Upton Park, their home for 110 years, at the end of next season to move into the Olympic Stadium.
