Half-Time Report: West Bromwich Albion lead Walsall through John Mullins own goal

Baggies ahead through Mullins own goal

West Bromwich Albion have opened up a deserved 1-0 lead after 45 minutes of their Capital One Cup second-round tie against Oxford United at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies dominated a first half in which they had 10 shots to Oxford's one, but they needed an own goal from John Mullins to break the deadlock.

The lively Stephane Sessegnon dragged two early shots wide, while Chris Brunt tested Mark Crocombe from distance as Albion started well against a side who have lost all four of their League Two fixtures this term.

A pacey front three of Sessegnon, Saido Berahino and club-record signing Brown Ideye continued to apply pressure to the visiting defence, which eventually paid dividends in the 29th minute.

Mullins inadvertently turned a low cross from Andre Wisdom into his own net from inside the six-yard box, and the hosts were the only team who appeared likely to add to the scores before the interval.

Ideye, who was starting his first game for the Baggies since joining for £10m, combined well with Sessegnon only to drill a 34th-minute shot over, and was denied a simple tap-in by Jake Wright's interception.
