End-of-season report: West Bromwich Albion

Sports Mole takes a close look at an eventful 2014-15 campaign for West Bromwich Albion.

West Bromwich Albion's 2014-15 campaign was a season of two halves, but one that ultimately ended positively with survival.

Alan Irvine's doomed tenure was ended at the turn of the year, with Tony Pulis being brought in to get the team out of trouble.

The former Stoke City and Crystal Palace boss made an immediate impact, eventually guiding the Baggies to a 13th-placed finish in the table.

Here, Sports Mole looks back at West Brom's battle for survival in the top flight.

August

West Brom had a new manager at the helm when the season kicked off in August following Irvine's appointment at The Hawthorns earlier in the summer. The Scot had taken little time in shaping the squad to his requirements, with a total of nine players coming in during the transfer window.

However, the Baggies saw their Premier League campaign start in mediocre fashion as draws with Sunderland and Southampton were followed by a chastening 3-0 defeat to Swansea City, leaving them with just two points from nine.

There was some cheer to be had in the League Cup though, with a victory over lowly Oxford United on penalties putting them through to the third round of the competition.

September

Their sticky start continued in September with a 2-0 loss at home to Everton, leading some supporters to openly boo the team come the final whistle.

Irvine knew that he needed a win quickly, and it arrived in style at White Hart Lane as West Brom pulled off a shock 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to give them their first league triumph of the season.

The only goal of the game arrived with 15 minutes left to play, when James Morrison headed in to hand his side three vital points.

This result seemed to boost the squad, with Saido Berahino shining in victories over Hull City and Burnley in the league and League Cup respectively. Having endured a difficult run of results, the Baggies finally seemed to have turned a corner.

October

An unbeaten run of three games in all competitions came to an end at the beginning of October with a 2-1 loss at Liverpool, but West Brom picked up a credible point in their next match when they held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns. Despite throwing away two leads against United, Irvine's side managed to hold on and thwart the Red Devils.

Another 2-2 draw followed against Crystal Palace before a 2-1 loss to high-flying Championship outfit Bournemouth in the third round of the League Cup temporarily halted any progress that the club thought it was making.

November

With the end of the year on the horizon, West Brom's form took a turn for the worse with a tough run of fixtures. Despite beating fellow strugglers Leicester City 1-0 at the King Power Stadium through an Esteban Cambiasso own goal, defeats to Newcastle United and Chelsea followed.

Their losing streak was extended to three matches against Arsenal, who came away from the Midlands with a hard-fought 1-0 victory after Danny Welbeck netted 30 minutes from time.

The defeat to the Gunners meant that West Brom had failed to score in over 300 minutes of action, and their slip down the table showed it.

December

A busy December saw the Baggies record just one win from six games, increasing the pressure on under-fire boss Irvine.

Defeats to West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, Manchester City and Stoke City forced West Brom down towards the relegation zone, while not even a 1-0 victory against local rivals Aston Villa could lift the gloom at the club.

After losing to Stoke in their final game of the year, the West Brom hierarchy decided that enough was enough and dismissed manager Irvine. The Scot had found life tricky at The Hawthorns and a string of disappointing results caused the club to wield the axe.

January

The West Brom hierarchy took little time in naming Irvine's successor, with former Stoke City and Crystal Palace manager Pulis stepping in to the breach.

Pulis began his reign with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United before the Baggies thrashed Gateshead 7-0 in the third round of the FA Cup. They were to progress even further in the competition towards the end of the month thanks to a 2-1 triumph at local rivals Birmingham City.

West Brom ended a four-game winless run in the Premier League with a vital 1-0 victory at home to Hull City on January 10, with Berahino scoring his ninth goal of the season. A 0-0 draw at Everton was to follow, but the month ended on a sour note as the Baggies were thrashed 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur.

February

West Brom enjoyed an unbeaten month in February, with progress made in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Draws with Burnley and Sunderland were complemented by important wins over Swansea City and Southampton. Berahino was the hero again for the Baggies, scoring in both of those triumphs.

Meanwhile, a resounding 4-0 victory over West Ham United sent Pulis's side through to the sixth round of the FA Cup.

March

A mixed month for West Brom saw the team lose to Aston Villa in the Premier League and FA Cup, while a 3-0 loss to Manchester City ended March on a disappointing note for the side.

However, three valuable points were to be had when Stoke City visited The Hawthorns as a 1-0 victory gave them a boost in their bid for survival.

Brown Ideye's resurgence under Pulis continued with the winning goal against the Potters to help West Brom edge towards the top half of the table.

April

With the team's survival still not guaranteed, successive defeats to Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City plunged West Brom back into trouble at the start of April.

However, four points from their next two matches gave the Baggies a boost in their bid to avoid the drop.

Their upturn in form began with a 2-0 triumph at Crystal Palace before a goalless draw at home to Liverpool pushed them closer to safety.

May

One of their most significant results of the season came at Old Trafford on May 2 as Chris Brunt's deflected free kick earned West Brom a shock 1-0 win over Manchester United, putting them on the verge of staying in the top flight.

Their survival was confirmed the following weekend with a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United, while it got better in their final home game of the season with a 3-0 thumping of champions Chelsea.

The Baggies' 2014-15 campaign ended on a losing note with a 4-1 thrashing by Arsenal, but a 13th-placed finish in the table will give everyone at the club encouragement heading into next season and Pulis's first full campaign in charge.
