Hartson: Speed was a legend

John Hartson has branded Gary Speed a "legend" and an "icon" after the tragic death of the former Wales manager last weekend.

Tributes continue to pour in for Speed this afternoon ahead of the day's early kickoffs, involving Leeds and Newcastle, two of the midfielder's former clubs.

Hartson, a teammate of Speed with the national side, is the latest in a long line of people involved in the game to pay tribute to the late Welshman.

"It's easy to call people a legend but he's well worthy of the plaudits," Hartson told BBC's Football Focus.

"Wales is still in mourning. He was an icon because of the effort he put in on the pitch. It's tragic."

Former Leeds players Gordan Strachan, Gary McAllister and David Batty laid a wreath in Speed's memory ahead of the Whites' game against Millwall at Elland Road this afternoon.
