Valencia put three past Villarreal to go second

Shkodran Mustafi scores a second-half brace as Valencia beat Villarreal 3-1 to climb up to second in La Liga.

Shkodran Mustafi scored a second-half brace as Valencia eased past Villarreal 3-1 to climb up to second in La Liga.

The visitors took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes when Villarreal defender Manuel Trigueros inadvertently slid a low cross into the corner of his own net.

Mustafi doubled Valencia's lead in the 64th minute with a powerful header from Pablo Piatti's cross.

The German, who also scored in last weekend's 3-1 win over Elche, sealed the win nine minutes later by volleying home from a Sofiane Feghouli corner.

Trigueros slammed home a late consolation to somewhat atone for his earlier own goal, but it didn't make any difference to the result.

It's just a second away win of the season for Valencia, but they have won all five games at home and now lie just a point adrift of Real Madrid. Villarreal stay eighth.
