Udinese downed by Verona comeback

Hellas Verona have ended an eight-game winless run in Serie A by coming from behind to beat Udinese 2-1 this afternoon.

Following a slow start to the match, Vangelis Moras came close for Verona when his deflected header was tipped over the bar by Orestis Karnezis.

The visitors threatened again two minutes later as Luca Toni nodded a corner just wide of the far post.

However, it was Udinese who went ahead in the 31st minute, when Antonio Di Natale headed a cross from Bruno Fernandes into the top corner.

Toni headed another effort wide soon after, but on the stroke of half time the veteran striker managed to draw Verona level.

He was found inside the box by Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, before turning away from his marker and firing a powerful drive into the top corner.

Within a minute of the second half, Verona took the lead as Christodoulopoulos burst into the box before drilling a low strike through the legs of Karnezis.

Udinese struggled to create any clear openings, but Silvan Widmer saw his close-range attempt blocked by the feet of Francesco Benussi as the game entered the last five minutes.

Substitute Mohamed Fares had the chance to make the points safe for Genoa in stoppage time when he raced clear and fired wide of the post, but it mattered little as the visitors held on for victory.
