Empoli come from behind to stun Udinese

Empoli score twice in the final 17 minutes to come from 1-0 down to shock Udinese and secure their first victory of the season in Serie A.

An injury-time winner from Massimo Maccarone has seen Empoli come from behind to stun 10-man Udinese with a 2-1 victory in the Serie A clash at Stadio Friuli.

Udinese had lost back-to-back games since shocking champions Juventus on the opening day, but they dominated from the off against the winless visitors and could have led had Danilo Larangeira's header from Antonio di Natale's free kick had more power.

They did take the lead almost immediately after that chance when Di Natale was again the creator, chipping an inviting ball into the box for Duvan Zapata to power a header home from point-blank range.

Panagiotis Kone had two chances to extend the advantage shortly before the break, firstly when his firm header from Di Natale's cross was saved by Lukasz Skorupski before he headed Ali Adnan's cross narrowly wide just seconds later.

Di Natale hit the post from an offside position as the hosts continued to press, but Riccardo Saponara fired a warning shot when his curling effort needed a good save from Orestis Karnezis to prevent it sneaking in.

The course of the match changed in the space of a crazy minute with a little over a quarter of an hour to play when Kone was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Empoli had been threatening prior to the red card, and they took full advantage immediately as Leandro Parades latched on to Federico Barba's ball to slot home decisively from 15 yards.

The visitors went for the jugular against the 10 men, sensing a chance for a first victory of the season, and the turnaround was complete in the third minute of stoppage time as former Middlesbrough striker Maccarone drove home to stun the home crowd.
