Sports Mole's transfer window review

January transfer window: Winners and losers

Now that the ink has dried on the deals that were concluded during yesterday's transfer deadline day, Sports Mole takes a look back over the previous 31 days to see which clubs completed the best and worst pieces of business.

In terms of quantity, 2012's January transfer window proved to be pretty low-key compared to the previous year.

There were no big moves to rival Fernando Torres's £50m switch to Chelsea or Andy Carroll's move to Liverpool for £35m.

Nevertheless, a number of teams were active last month - some more than others.

The busiest manager was Queens Park Rangers boss Mark Hughes, who secured the services of five players. While doubts remain over the quality of full-back Taye Taiwo, there are no questions marks over Bobby Zamora and Nedum Onuoha's ability to play in the Premier League.

Djibril Cisse also arrives at Loftus Road with a point to prove to English crowds and any goals he can score between now and May could prove priceless.

Also making positive strides was Everton manager David Moyes. The Scot finally secured a much-needed striker in form of Glasgow Rangers frontman Nikica Jelavic and also recaptured Steven Pienaar on a loan basis from Tottenham Hotspur. The South African international may provide the creativity in the middle of the park that has been lacking since Mikel Arteta's summer departure.

The Toffees did lose the services of Louis Saha to Tottenham Hotspur, but Moyes will be hoping that Jelavic's arrival will cover the loss of the Frenchman.

Talking of Spurs, they pulled off the surprise signing of veteran defender Ryan Nelsen from Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer, allowing Sebastian Bassong to leave the club on a temporary basis for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The two Manchester clubs secured the services of one first-team player in January, with Man City adding Roma's attacking midfielder David Pizarro on a loan deal. Meanwhile, United went some way to filling their midfield void by tempting Paul Scholes out of retirement. Whether that is enough to give them the edge in the title race, only time will tell.

Chelsea added Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill for £7m, who was replaced at the Reebok Stadium by New York Red Bulls centre-back Tim Ream.

Away from the Premier League, West Ham United caught the eye with three attacking additions on deadline day. Heading through the entrance at Upton Park were Ravel Morrison (Manchester United), Nicky Maynard (Bristol City) and Ricardo Vaz Te (Barnsley). West Ham fans called for more attacking influence within the squad and manager Sam Allardyce delivered.

One club that failed to inspire their supporters is West Bromwich Albion. On deadline day boss Roy Hodgson landed Liam Ridgewell (a Championship defender with Birmingham City) and Keith Andrews (a reserve at Blackburn Rovers). Hardly additions that will get bums on seats.

Wigan Athletic fans are in a similar boat to their West Brom counterparts, with only Birmingham City's winger Jean Beausejour signed as the club look to fight of the threat of relegation.

At least both of those clubs have signings on which to form opinions. Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish decided that his squad did not require strengthening last month, but for a couple of academy additions.

We end on a somewhat frustratingly common occurrence for Arsenal supporters. Once again Arsene Wenger refused to delve too deeply into his pockets, adding only Thomas Eisfeld to his squad. Gunners fan will not be getting too excited by the 19-year-old, who failed to make a first-team appearance for previous club Borussia Dortmund.
