Preview: Tranmere Rovers vs. Stevenage - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League Two clash between Tranmere Rovers and Stevenage, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Promotion-chasing Tranmere Rovers will look to bounce back from Saturday's heavy defeat to Forest Green Rovers when they welcome Stevenage to Prenton Park.

The visitors, meanwhile, have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes in recent weeks and will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run to six games on Tuesday.

Tranmere, who sit in second place in League Two, suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of the league leaders Forest Green at the weekend.

Two Forest Green Rovers goals either side of half time ended Tranmere's ten-game unbeaten run, but they have the chance to respond immediately on Tuesday.

The hosts enter the midweek contest a point clear of Sutton United in fourth place, and with Forest Green 10 points clear at the top, finishing in the top three will be Tranmere's main priority.

Despite losing at home at the weekend, Rovers hold the second-best home record in League Two this season having collected 30 points from their 14 league encounters at Prenton Park.

Their steely defence has played a key role in their impressive home form, with Micky Mellon's side keeping eight league clean sheets at home this season.

Meanwhile, Stevenage are climbing their way up the table and find themselves in 17th place after avoiding defeat in their last five league games.

On Saturday, Paul Tisdale's side eased to a 3-0 home victory over Harrogate Town, with Jake Reeves, Luke Norris and Jake Taylor all getting on the scoresheet.

Having played four of their last five matches at home, Stevenage now face the tricky task of consecutive away fixtures starting with a trip to Prenton Park on Tuesday.

Only seven of their 31 points have been picked up away from home, with Tuesday's visitors still searching for their second away league win of the season.

Goals have been particularly hard to come by on the road, with Tuesday's visitors failing to score in eight of their 13 away games, while only Oldham have scored fewer goals (6) on their travels in League Two this season than Stevenage (7).

Team News

Defender Tom Davies is a doubt for the midweek encounter after missing Tranmere's last two games due to injury.

Nathaniel Knight-Percival returned from injury to start Saturday's contest, and the 34-year-old is expected to partner Peter Clarke in the centre of defence once again on Tuesday.

Despite being replaced at half time against Forest Green Rovers, Charlie Jolley is expected to start up front alongside Kane Hemmings.

As for Stevenage, they could name an unchanged team for the midweek fixture after such an impressive display at the weekend.

That would mean that the visitors line up with a familiar centre back partnership of Scott Cuthbert and Luke Prosser.

After scoring his second goal in a Stevenage shirt at the weekend, Reeves will once again feature in a midfield three alongside Terence Vancooten and Zain Westbrooke.

Tranmere Rovers possible starting lineup:
Doohan; Dacres-Cogley, Clarke, Knight-Percival, MacDonald; McPake, O'Connor, Spearing, Morris; Hemmings, Jolley

Stevenage possible starting lineup:
Pym; O'Neill, Cuthbert, Prosser, Coker; Westbrooke, Vancooten, Reeves; Taylor, Reid, Norris

We say: Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Stevenage

Tranmere have not drawn at home all season, and we do not expect that to change here when they face a Stevenage side that tend to struggle on the road.

We think that the visitors will come up just short against a Tranmere side that have won five of their last six home league games.
