Preview: Tottenham Hotspur Ladies vs. Manchester City Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Tottenham Hotspur Ladies and Manchester City Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

A vital clash between two teams in the mix for a top-three finish in the Women's Super League takes place on Sunday at The Hive Stadium, where Manchester City Women will travel to face Tottenham Hotspur Ladies.

Manchester United currently occupy third spot, with Spurs sitting just behind them in fourth on the same amount of points, while Man City have a game in hand on both of their league rivals and are just five points behind.

Rehanne Skinner's side are aiming to extend their unbeaten run to four games this weekend, having been held to a goalless draw against Reading last time out.

Spurs would have felt that they created enough chances to come away from Berkshire with maximum points but they were not clinical enough in the final third.

That has been the story of Tottenham's season so far, having scored at least 11 fewer than their Champions League-chasing rivals, suggesting that they may need another clean sheet on Sunday to avoid defeat.

Skinner's team have a strong record on home soil, remaining unbeaten in North London in their seven matches, perhaps making Sunday's hosts the favourites for this clash.

With Man City claiming a game in hand on Spurs, if the home side lose this encounter, they may feel that they are out of the top-three race, with only six matches to play after this gameweek, including playing Arsenal and Chelsea twice.

Gareth Taylor's side have a game in hand on the teams around them in the division as they were busy in League Cup action last weekend, when they lifted their first trophy in two years.

Man City had to come from behind at The Cherry Records Stadium, after Samantha Kerr had given Chelsea the lead, but an inspired second-half comeback led by a brace from Caroline Weir and a third goal from Ellen White, gave the Citizens jubilation last Sunday.

Having been in FA Cup action the week prior to that, Taylor's side have not featured in the WSL since before the international break, last beating rivals Man United on 13 February.

Midfielder Weir was on target again and that was the difference in Man City's 1-0 win over their Manchester rivals, which sent a big statement of intent that Man City's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next year are not over.

Taylor's team have only lost once in their last 12 matches across all competitions, perhaps putting them in the best position to be the first side to take a win home with them after travelling to face Spurs.

This will be the third meeting between these two sides this season, after Spurs edged a 2-1 win at the Academy Stadium in the reverse fixture, before Man City got their revenge in the League Cup with a 3-0 win in February.

Team News

Spurs goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela returned to the starting 11 in the WSL for the first time since the end of January last time out, and she is expected to continue between the posts in place of Becky Spencer.

Jessica Naz was replaced in the lineup by Eveliina Summanen but the former could come back into the side on the left-wing, with Summanen operating on the right of the attacking midfield three.

Rachel Williams will continue to lead the line for the hosts, looking to end her six-game WSL goal drought, looking for her fifth goal of the campaign and first since the middle of December.

Man City's form is reflective of the fact that Taylor now has a full squad to select from, having been hit with a number of big injuries this season, but captain Steph Houghton will remain sidelined.

Alanna Kennedy and Alex Greenwood are certain to continue in the heart of defence, while Jessica Park, White and Lauren Hemp will be looking to cause problems for the Spurs defence.

Weir has been in fine form, and she is likely to retain her place in midfield from the cup final last weekend, along with Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway.

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies possible starting lineup:
Korpela; Neville, Zadorsky, Bartrip, Harrop; Percival, Clemaron; Naz, Simon, Summanen; Williams

Manchester City Women possible starting lineup:
Roebuck; Bronze, Kennedy, Greenwood, Stokes; Stanway, Walsh, Weir; Hemp, White, Park

We say: Tottenham Hotspur Ladies 1-2 Manchester City Women

Spurs are strong on their own patch, so they will not let an in-form Man City team easily walk over them as they have done to many teams in recent weeks.

However, in the form that Taylor's side are in, and after a cup final triumph over Chelsea, Man City are expected to be able to carry that on and collect a crucial three points on Sunday.
