Torino vs Fiorentina - prediction, team news, lineups

After securing progress in Europe, Fiorentina will seek their first Serie A win of the new season when they visit Torino on Sunday.

The Viola followed up a disappointing draw in their league opener with a shaky success in the Conference League, and they now meet hosts who were torn apart on the opening matchday.

Match preview

Despite scoring with their sole shot on target, Fiorentina had to settle for a 1-1 draw in Cagliari last weekend, as Rolando Mandragora's strike was dramatically cancelled out in second-half stoppage time.

Putting that setback to one side, the Viola returned to continental action on Thursday, having powered to a 3-0 win in the first leg of their Conference League playoff against Polissya Zhytomyr one week earlier.

With one foot already in the main draw, the Tuscan team were widely expected to reach the league phase of a competition in which they have made at least the final four in each of the past three seasons.

However, Stefano Pioli's side found themselves trailing by two within 14 minutes at Stadio Franchi, before a late flurry - capped off by Edin Dzeko's first goal for the club - eased any nerves and saw them through 6-2 on aggregate.

In search of a first league win, Fiorentina now head to Turin, having failed to keep a single clean sheet on their travels around Italy since last November.

The Viola are unbeaten in six meetings with Torino, though, taking four points off the Granata last season.

Like most of Fiorentina's opponents, Sunday's hosts will have eyes firmly fixed on danger man Moise Kean, who scored in both games against them last term - including the only goal at Stadio Olimpico Grande.

Torino's defence is already under pressure to perform, after shipping five to Inter Milan on Serie A's opening matchday.

It was a night to forget for new boss Marco Baroni, who was overseeing his first league game, having made his dugout debut in a 1-0 Coppa Italia win over Modena.

That success set up a second-round clash with Pisa in late September, but first Toro must face Fiorentina, Roma and Atalanta BC amid a tough start to their top-flight schedule.

Dating back to the tail end of Paolo Vanoli's reign, the Granata have now lost four consecutive Serie A matches without scoring - they have never recorded five straight defeats without finding the net.

As Torino also produced just six wins from 19 home fixtures last season, Baroni will be doubly keen to impress the home fans and get back on track straight away.

Team News

After serving the first game of a two-match UEFA suspension, Kean can return to Fiorentina's lineup this weekend, spearheading Stefano Pioli's 3-4-2-1 formation.

The Viola's head coach made several changes in midweek, but regulars such as Luca Ranieri and Robin Gosens should also be recalled to the starting XI.

Only Christian Kouame is sidelined by injury, while new arrival Roberto Piccoli can compete for selection alongside Kean and veteran striker Edin Dzeko.

Meanwhile, Torino will be missing summer signing Ardian Ismajli and long-term absentee Perr Schuurs; Chilean centre-back Guillermo Maripan should be available, though, after regaining full fitness.

New boys Franco Israel, Giovanni Simeone and Cyril Ngonge all started at San Siro, while Tino Anjorin and Zakaria Aboukhlal were involved from the bench. Inter midfielder Kristjan Asllani has since joined and could be selected.

Che Adams and Duvan Zapata must vie with Simeone to start up front: the latter scored 20 goals in 74 league appearances for Fiorentina from 2017 to 2019, but he has only found the net once in his last 54 Serie A matches.

Torino possible starting lineup: Israel; Pedersen, Coco, Maripan, Biraghi; Asllani, Casadei; Ngonge, Gineitis, Vlasic; Simeone

Fiorentina possible starting lineup: De Gea; Comuzzo, Pongracic, Ranieri; Dodo, Fagioli, Sohm, Gosens; Gudmundsson, Fazzini; Kean

We say: Torino 1-2 Fiorentina

Some smart recruitment and the return of an experienced manager could help Fiorentina take the next step, and they should post their first league win this weekend.

Torino have questions to answer at the back, so the likes of Kean, Dzeko, Gudmundsson and Piccoli could cause them plenty of problems.
