FA charges Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey with violent conduct

Shelvey hit with FA charge

The Football Association has charged Jonjo Shelvey with violent conduct for throwing an elbow in the direction of Liverpool's Emre Can.

Referee Andre Marriner missed the incident at Anfield yesterday, but the FA has since reviewed the footage and deemed that Shelvey unnecessarily swung at Can's face.

The incident took place in the first half, before Shelvey scored an own goal that sealed a 4-1 win for the Reds.

He denied deliberately elbowing Can, while Swans boss Garry Monk was confident that the midfielder would avoid punishment.

While Shelvey has been charged, Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has escaped punishment after he appeared to put a hand to Federico Fernandez's face in the same game.

If Shelvey accepts the charge or unsuccessfully appeals, he will face a four-game ban as it is his second red card of the season.

It is the second time in two days that the FA has retrospectively punished a swinging arm after Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse was hit with the same charge yesterday.
