Garry Monk hails "exceptional" Montero

Swansea City boss Garry Monk has paid tribute to the "exceptional" Jefferson Montero after another impressive performance in today's 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

The Ecuador winger had a hand in City's second of the afternoon by setting up Andre Ayew to double the lead on 52 minutes, after Bafetimbi Gomis opened the scoring.

Montero won praise for the way in which he troubled Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic last week, and Monk says that the 25-year-old's menace was reflected in the fact that Daryl Janmaat earned two first-half yellow cards in tackles made against him.

"I thought Jeff was a little bit more quiet today but I thought when he contributed he did it well," he told reporters "I think you could see their tactic straight away was to basically try and kick him.

"But credit to the ref. He spotted that very early, made the correct decisions and, quite rightly, the player was sent off in the end.

"I thought he did exceptional again today and he's always a threat, but we have threats everywhere at this moment in time."

Montero netted once and created seven goals in 30 Premier League appearances last term.
