Sunderland striker Connor Wickham has revealed that discussions with manager Gus Poyet were crucial to him signing a long-term contract at the club.
The 21-year-old penned a four-year extension at the Stadium of Light this week, ending speculation regarding his future after he was linked with a move away from the Black Cats.
Wickham has revealed that he is excited about his future at the club following his conversations with Poyet.
He told the club's official website: "It is great to have it sorted so I can settle and concentrate on my football.
"I spoke to the gaffer and I'm really excited about his plans for the club, myself and for how he wants me to play, which it is exciting for me and the rest of the team so I'm looking forward to the future.
"He has helped my game massively. This season I have sat down and talked to him a lot which has been great for me."
Sunderland are 15th in the Premier League table following their 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Saturday.
